Are you having this message "Your computer is infected" on your desktop background but your Norton Antivirus (expired) can’t find any infected files? You can’t run Hijack This, Malwarebytes MBAM or Kaspersky Antivirus 2009, ComboFix… The Taskbar, Windows Restore, Explorer, Firefox… programs are disabled. Basically, your computer is useless.
I recently had to deal with the above problems when I tried to help my neighbor fixing their heavily virus infected laptop.
There are no helps from many Tech forums because I can’t launch any programs (Hijack This, ComboFix..) that I was asked to run. So, how did I fix that laptop? This is a simple way to remove Virus, Spyware, Trojan Horse.
-
Download Kaspersky Rescue ISO which is free and burn it to a CD (Of course, I have to do this on another computer)
-
Boot the infected computer using the Rescue CD.
-
Update Virus Definitions to the latest then let it scan the C drive.
-
Get rid of any infected files and reboot. By now, I have the Taskbar, System Restore, Explorer back which is a good sign.

- Turn off the System Restore feature on all drives.
- Run GMER which found some hidden files and service. I have GMER remove those.
- Install free MBAM (my favorite), update it and let it scan and remove any infections.
- Install free version of Avira’s AntiVir and run full scan which reports some very minor “detections.
- Computer is an important tool in your life. Don't let it lock you out again. Buy and install a good virus protection software for you safe computing. I would personally recommend Kaspersky Internet Security which is not so heavy for your computer, but has good virus, spyware detection.
- If you have corrupted system files, you need to run SFC Scannow
a- Go to Start - Run - type sfc /scannow - hit ok (Note the space between the c and the /). It will ask you to insert a Windows XP installation disc.
b- Allow the scan to run and when completed, reboot the system.
So, Kaspersky Rescue CD really rescued my neighbor laptop. I also downloaded Avira AntiVir Rescue System (work similar as Kaspersky Rescue), but I didn’t have to use it. May be next time! I hope you will get your computer back with this simple but effective Virus, Spyware, Trojan Horse removal guide.
