It is obvious that the biggest reason why one would want to buy refurbished is because of the price. You could get at least 20% off the price that you would have to pay if you bought the laptop brand new. So, what is the risk of buying “Refurbished Laptops”? For me, the risk level is very low or almost non-existent. I have been buying more than hundred laptops for myself, relatives, friends, co-workers… from Dell, Lenovo.
What is refurbished laptops and where do they come from? Let take Dell for example, Dell offers three types of refurbished inventory: Certified Refurbished, Previously Ordered New and Scratch and Dent.
-
Previously Ordered New systems are PCs that were canceled orders, or PCs that shipped out to a customer who either did not open the box or decided to return the system without ever using it. Previously Ordered New systems do not have any cosmetic damages..
-
Certified Refurbished PCs are laptops and desktops that have been returned to Dell, put through the production process, and then again retested to ensure they meet all original factory specifications. Certified Refurbished systems may have some observable cosmetic blemishes, but they will not affect performance.

- Scratch and Dent products are systems with considerable cosmetic blemishes that do not affect performance. They are a great way to save money while still enjoying Dell Outlet's rigorous rebuilding and testing process. Scratch and Dent computers will not have scratches or pits on the screen, missing or illegible letters on the keyboard, or damage to the touchpad or palmrest.
Depending on your risk tolerance level, you can decide which type of refurbished laptop is right for you. The risk is just the time and hassles for dealing with the laptop manufacturer to resolve the problems. Don’t let Certified Refurbished scare you off. Just because some defective component (RAM, hard drive, wireless card, mother board…) has been replaced, it doesn’t mean the laptop won’t work as good as a new one.
How to buy
- Buy directly from laptop manufacturers (Dell, HP, Lenovo…)
- Make sure the refurbished laptop has the same warranty, return policy as a new one.
- Take your time to check through the entire inventory to find the best deal. (Dell inventory is changed by hour; days for Lenovo)
- Using coupon to sweeten the deal (I will post Dell coupons here when I have them, so check back often)
